Rhino Beetles - serious bugs!
While landscaping our front yard we were a little shocked to find what looked like huge white maggots - our next door neighbor told us they were Grub Worms, and nothing to worry about. But they were up to 3 inches long!
We didn't think much else about it until a few weeks later when I was back digging in the same area and dug up a few huge beetles. Tara even joked that they might be connected but I wasn't convinced.
And then we found the missing link - something that looked half like the "grub worm" and half like the beetle...
So we did some research and discovered that indeed they were all the same insect at various stages of development - some species take 3 years to become beetles.
These are big, heavy beetles - amazingly they are the strongest creature on Earth and can carry 850 times their own weight! That's the equivalent of me carrying over 70 cars.
