Community Art Project on display at Riverside Park

River Songs, this year’s “artSWELL” Festival community art project, is currently on display at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road. On Saturday, March 6th, site sculptor Jeff Mather led a team of middle school students from Queen of Angels School and The Cottage School in constructing this temporary environmental sculpture. The project will be on display through the end of March.

Site art begins with a careful consideration of a site and its surroundings. The community team met in advance to brainstorm about possibilities for the Riverside Park site. A long grassy knoll between the parking area and the playgrounds was selected and digital photos of the site were enlarged and printed to be used as sketch paper.

The site seemed suitable for a long sculpture, so the long Chattahoochee River offered itself as the primary inspiration. Maps of the section of the Chattahoochee that passes through Roswell were used to draw the path along the hill that the sculpture would follow. It “echoes” the line of a mile-long section of the River from the Roswell Road bridge eastward.

The twenty student artists each chose different ways to create forms that would add to the sensation of movement along the 66-foot long path. The resulting site sculpture activates its environment in a fresh new way and is an expression of the community coming together to express itself in collaboration.

The mission of "artSWELL" is twofold: to expose the youth of Roswell to arts and culture-related activities that are available for them here in their own community as well as to inspire them to become artists by directly exposing them to top quality visual and performing arts.

Student artist Lauren Lonergan stated, “I thought artSWELL was a great experience. We got to learn more about sculptures and what sculptors do. It was very interesting and made me have a better appreciation for sculptures and all that work that goes into them.”
