Dear Editor,

I read the article that appeared on your website concerning the City’s website and our fall program registration for Recreation and Parks and felt that I should respond since the responsibility for the City’s website falls under my supervision.

This morning the City’s website went down due to technical difficulties and we regret any inconvenience and apologize to residents who were trying to register for the City’s Recreation and Parks fall programs. Registration for the programs began at 8 a.m. today and folks were unable to get through to the site because of this error. We began working on the problem immediately and the site was restored at 8:45 a.m. Those who called City Hall before 8:45 a.m. were given another web address that allowed them to register until the City’s site came back online.

We take a lot of pride in the City’s website which serves our residents, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Website crashes are extremely rare for our site, but like all websites, occasionally we will have technical difficulties. There is a wealth of information posted on the site from City Council meeting minutes and agendas to press releases and notices, and we have an extensive database for the convenience of our residents. The City’s website runs at peak performance. However, that has not stopped us from looking at ways to make it more user-friendly, expand the database to hold more information, and install new and updated software to keep it running smoothly. The City’s website is important to our elected officials and our staff as it is a means of communication with our residents and an important service to them.
