11-Alive News with Donna Lowry Features Epstein's Caring Community: Earthquake Creates Teachable Moments 2 Epstein news segments aired January 22 on 11-Alive News Class Notes

11-Alive News-WXIA education reporter Donna Lowry visited The Epstein School to highlight 5th grade students in John Palmer’s Earth Science class who are learning about earthquakes in the wake of the events in Haiti.

The news report examines how Epstein educators like John Palmer are engaging and stimulating students to learn from the tragedy in Haiti, and trying to turn tragedy into a teachable moment.
In addition, Ms. Lowry spoke to students like Jake Berne who is on coach Mendell Midy's boys basketball team and elementary students who are making Hope For Haiti bracelets. The bracelets are being sold to raise money to help the victims of the earthquake. The Epstein School is well-known for its caring community because the school always reaches out to help those in need, whether local, national or international. In addition to the numerous clothing, food and tzedakah drives the school participates in annually, Epstein has always engaged in national and international efforts including helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami in Asia. One of those victims, Linda Parmet was also interviewed to gain perspective on the current crisis. Linda and her family are one of the families that Epstein helped in the aftermath of Katrina and is now a teacher at The Epstein School. Her children also attend school at Epstein.

Now, The Epstein School community is engaged in several fundraisers help the people of Haiti. From Hope for Haiti bracelets to tzedakah drives, hot chocolate mornings, middle school dance and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament (Hoops for Haiti), the Epstein community will be there to give their support and prayers to those who are suffering. The Epstein School is very proud of its caring community.
Additionally, FOX5 News WAGA-Atlanta ran a news segment about Coach Mendell's poignant story and front page feature stories were written about coach Mendell Middy and The Epstein School's efforts to raise money in both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Atlanta Jewish Times.
