Roswell Historic & Cultural Affairs presents "Open Inhibitions"
The Historic and Cultural Affairs Division of the City of Roswell is pleased to be presenting it's first visual art exhibit of the 2003/04 series, Open Inhibitions, featuring the work of Roswell artist Frank Shelton. The show, which is curated by Susan Bridges of Atlanta, will be presented in the lobby of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center from October 9 through November 2. There will be an opening reception on Thursday evening, October 9 from 7pm-9pm. Regular viewing hours will be, Monday-Saturday from 10:00am to 7:00pm.
This is the first in a series of three visual art exhibits being mounted by the Division during '03/04. The next show will take place in February 2004 and will be held in conjunction with the Roswell Roots Festival of Black History and Culture. The third exhibit will take place in April '04.
G. Morgan Timmis, Historic and Cultural Affairs Manager for the City says, "The division and the Programming Committee of the Roswell Cultural Arts Board has a mission to present fine art that isn't currently being shown in Roswell galleries. It was important that we bring in a professional curator to assist in mounting the exhibits. Susan Bridges has years of experience and she has been able to help us find artists whose work is outstanding and not regularly seen in Roswell."
Frank Shelton considers his work to be historical in the sense that the images and forms serve as visual journals of time spent in the studio. The work records spoken and unspoken thoughts, concerns, desires and dreams. Shelton feels the product and the process are important. While both are essential it is the process that sustains him artistically. However, he states, “The product and process are dead without passion.”
Frank has participated in numerous juried shows including Artscape (Atlanta 1999, 2000, 2001), Winter Park (Winter Park, FL - Award winner, 2000), and numerous others. Frank has been a teacher at the Roswell Visual Art Center since 2001 and holds a Masters in Fine Arts/Painting from the University of Memphis.
