2004 Roswell "artSWELL" Festival Shares the Wonder of the Arts

On Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7, 2004, the City of Roswell Historic and Cultural Affairs Division will be presenting the fourth annual "artSWELL: art, history & science for youth" Festival. The mission of "artSWELL" is twofold: to expose the youth of Roswell to arts and culture-related activities that are available for them here in their own community as well as to inspire them to become artists by directly exposing them to top quality visual and performing arts. These two purposes are accomplished in two ways: through the activities provided during the two-day “artSWELL” festival itself as well as with the publication and distribution to over 25,000 households of a brochure containing information about all Roswell area arts and culture-related programs available throughout the year.

Most "artSWELL" activities will take place on Saturday, March 6 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forrest Street. Kids ranging in age from two to seventeen are invited to come and learn about arts and culture-related activities available in Roswell. Participating groups include Bulloch Hall, Smith Plantation, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Red Door Playhouse, Kudzu Playhouse, and many more. These groups will be conducting interactive workshops and demonstrations to give attendees a taste of what their programs have to offer. The day’s activities also include two free live performances each by Georgia Ensemble Theatre of their production of Charlotte’s Web and children’s winning singer/songAlso on Saturday, site sculptor Jeff Mather will lead a team of students as they construct a temporary environmental sculpture at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road.

Sunday's event is the Culture-Quest Scavenger Hunt that begins at 1:30PM at the Teaching Museum North, 791 Mimosa Boulevard. Participants will be asked questions that can only be answered by visiting a variety of arts and cultural sites throughout the Roswell Historic District. The conclusion of the hunt will also be at the Teaching Museum North. The first participant to arrive there with all of the correct answers will win a $500 savings bond. The prize is being provided by corporate sponsor Inspired Practices in Early Childhood Education, Inc.

G. Morgan Timmis, the City’s Historic & Cultural Affairs Manager, says, “The last three years’ events have been so successful. We felt as though we were opening the doors to the wonder of the arts for so many of the area youth. Thousands of kids have participated and had the opportunity to be immersed in the world of arts and culture for the day. And it's all entirely free. It is so very gratifying to know that coming to ‘artSWELL’ could lead a child into a lifetime of enjoyment of the arts.”

The Festival is overseen by a nine-member steering committee comprised of City staff and community volunteers. In addition to the City of Roswell, public funding support is provided by Fulton County through the Fulton County Arts Council.
